Soul Sanctuary Dance - Freestyle Community Dance in Berkeley, California

About the Dance & What to expect

Every Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm, we dance to an irresistible eclectic blend of world music, funk, house, soul, electro swing, positive hip hop, reggae, dance classics, jazz, blues, electronica, and other music to free mind, body and soul.

Soul Sanctuary Dance is a welcoming and inclusive all-ages community freestyle/ecstatic/shoes optional dance that supports free expression, community, physical and emotional health, and a spirit of generosity. The dance is organized and produced by volunteers.

You should expect to be welcomed warmly and
• to make yourself comfortable, taking off your shoes and socks if you wish
• to enjoy slower/ambient music at first, giving you a chance to stretch and warm up
• to dance to an eclectic mix of tunes
• to get a great workout if that's your goal; to enjoy moving gently if you prefer not to work up a sweat
• to be surprised and delighted by the children and teens who dance with us
• to be yourself on the dance floor, and connect with others as you wish
• to enjoy slower music towards the end,  to cool down and savor the change in pace
• to join us for closing circle after the music ends at 12:45, and enjoy some free organic fruit
• to leave feeling energized and ready for the week ahead!

Please read our Community Agreements.

Another Perspective on our Dance:

helpful hints & Etiquette

Arrive on time
The music we play at the start of our dance is chosen with care to help you get off to a good start.

Connect with yourself and your body first

Stretch, dance to our gentle opening music, and find your connection to yourself before dancing with others.

Set yourself free in your expression
Feel free to do the things you don't normally let yourself do.

After connecting with yourself, connect/dance with other dancers if they wish
Make eye contact, reach out and connect, be inspired by the way someone else is dancing and "try it on." Value the non-verbal interactions our dance enables; if you must have a verbal conversation, bring it to the side of the room.

Participate in the closing circle at the end of the dance
This is a wonderful way to complete your dance. Some of us choose to say something about the experience we've just had. We always leave time for community announcements at the end.
